What Is a Paver?

A paver is a flat piece of stone, concrete, brick, or other material used to create walkways, patios, driveways, or other outdoor surfaces. They should be set in sand, gravel, or mortar to form a durable, stable surface for walking or lounging on.

Now, you may be picturing just a solid and boring square piece of material, but pavers are so much more than that. They come in a range of patterns, sizes, shapes, colors, and textures, allowing homeowners to really personalize the look of their landscaping and embrace a wide range of design possibilities.

What Are the Benefits of Using Pavers in Hardscaping?

  • They have strong aesthetic appeal. What’s your vision? Pavers come in various shapes, colors, sizes, and materials, allowing for endless design possibilities, and they can be arranged in different patterns and combinations. Matching (and enhancing the look of) any landscape design isn’t a problem.
  • They’re known for their durability and strength. Pavers are designed to withstand heavy loads, making them ideal for driveways, walkways, and high-traffic areas. They can also endure harsh weather conditions, including freeze-thaw cycles, without cracking or deteriorating.
  • They adapt well to temperature fluctuations. Unlike concrete slabs, pavers have joints that allow them to flex with temperature changes, reducing the risk of cracking and breakage. On that same note, damaged paver sections can be easily replaced, if needed.
  • They’re relatively low maintenance. Regular sweeping and occasional washing with water and mild detergent keeps pavers looking good. In addition, sealing pavers helps prevent weed growth and stains from oil, grease, and other substances. Other than that, there’s not much to their maintenance routine!
  • They’re good for drainage. Permeable pavers allow water to seep through, reducing runoff and improving drainage, which is beneficial for the environment and helps prevent flooding and water-related home damages. In addition, properly installed pavers can help control erosion in landscaped areas.
  • They’re safe to walk on. Many pavers are designed to provide a non-slip surface, making them safer for walkways, pool decks, and other areas where slipping could be a concern.
  • They last a long time. Pavers are built to last for decades when properly installed and maintained, offering a long-term hardscaping solution.
  • They’re affordable. While the initial cost might be higher than some other options, the durability and low maintenance requirements of pavers helps save some significant dollars over time – definitely not something to overlook.
  • They’re versatile and great for upgrades. Pavers are suitable for various applications, including patios, driveways, walkways, pool decks, and garden paths, and using them to change your layout can be done without extensive demolition.

What Are the Different Types of Pavers Available?

So, you’ve done some research and it’s clear that pavers are durable and versatile options for enhancing your home’s hardscaping. What exactly are your options in terms of material types?

Concrete Pavers
Made from cement, sand, and gravel, these pavers are versatile and available in a variety of shapes, colors, and finishes. Some concrete pavers are also designed to interlock with each other, making installation easier and ensuring swift repairs, should a replacement section be needed down the line.

These options are ideal for driveways, patios, walkways, and pool decks due to their strength and adaptability. Best of all, concrete pavers can be finished to mimic the appearance of natural stone or brick – providing a cost-effective alternative with that high aesthetic appeal you’re craving.

Brick Pavers
Made from natural clay, these pavers have a classic look and are highly durable. They come in various sizes and colors, typically in earthy tones, and the pattern of the brick can also be varied, ensuring that personalized touch you’re dreaming of.

Brick pavers are known for their ability to withstand heavy loads and resist staining. They are often used in driveways, walkways, patios, and even as a decorative edging to a specific area. Their timeless appearance and natural variation in color add a rustic charm to any landscape.

Natural Stone Pavers
There’s a few different types of natural stone pavers: granite, which is known for its strength and durability; limestone, which has a more uniform texture and is available in a range of neutral colors; slate, which has a unique and natural appearance with rich color variations; and sandstone, which is durable and comes in warm or natural hues.

What’s best for your home will usually depend on what area you’re using the paver on – walkways, pool areas, garden areas, patios, etc. We can help you go through the options and make the right choice.

Cobblestone Pavers
Traditionally made from granite or basalt, cobblestones are extremely durable and offer a historic, rustic look. Cobblestone pavers can withstand heavy loads and extreme weather conditions, making them a long-lasting option that adds character and charm to any setting.

So…which is right for me?
Each type of paver has its own advantages and the type you choose should factor in the type of project you’re working on and the area you’re looking to enhance. We’ll help you work through a variety of factors – like your desired aesthetic, the level of traffic you’re expecting, typical climate conditions, budget, etc. – all of which will help you navigate this process.

How Durable Are Hardscaping Pavers?

Hardscaping pavers, in general, are known for their durability and weather-resistance. That said, pavers are made from various materials, including concrete, brick, and natural stone, and each material has its own level of durability. Anything you choose should be pretty reliable, but we can talk about which options are known for standing out above the rest.

You’ll also want to ensure proper installation, as this is crucial for the durability of pavers – and it’s why you should opt for professional help if you’re not very well-versed in how to get the job done correctly.

And, of course, proper and regular maintenance will extend the lifespan of your paver, as well. This includes doing things like applying a sealant – to protect it from stains, moisture, and UV damage – and completing regular cleaning – to prevent the buildup of dirt, moss, and algae (all of which can cause slipping and surface damage).

Note that pavers used in driveways or areas with heavy traffic need to be thicker and stronger to handle the load without cracking or shifting, so this is definitely something to consider as you make your purchase.

How Do Pavers Hold Up in Different Weather Conditions?

Well, it depends a lot on the paver – what it’s made from, how old it is, how well (or not) it was installed, etc. That said, here’s a general guideline of what to expect in different seasons.

Warm/Hot Weather
Most pavers will absorb heat – or, at the very least, become quite hot with exposure to direct sunlight – which may make them uncomfortable to walk on barefoot. If this is a concern, go for something less prone to take on the heat, like lighter-colored pavers or materials like natural stone, both of which tend to stay cooler.

Permeable pavers also allow for better heat dissipation and can reduce surface temperatures.

Cold Weather
Freeze/thaw cycles are definitely something to be aware of, as any material that can absorb water will be prone to cracking, breaking, and eventual deterioration when temps drop below zero.

That said, proper installation with a good base and drainage should help to prevent water from getting trapped and freezing underneath. Concrete pavers are generally resilient if properly installed, as they are less porous and absorb less water (compared to materials like clay bricks).

Wet/Rainy Conditions
The porosity of your paver material will need to be considered here. Concrete pavers, for instance, are less porous, reducing the risk of erosion and upping the chances of maintaining their structural integrity. Bricks, on the other hand, are more porous and can absorb water, which can lead to moss or algae growth in shaded, damp areas.

Consider your needs and talk with our experts to ensure you get the most appropriate option for your needs.

How Do I Maintain & Clean Pavers?

If you want your paver to look great and stand the test of time, maintaining it properly is a must. Here are some guidelines to help you keep your pavers in tip-top condition for the long haul:

  • Sweep it regularly. Remove debris, leaves, and dirt using a broom or leaf blower to prevent stains and weed growth.
  • Clean spills promptly. Wipe up spills like oil, grease, or food immediately to prevent staining. Use an absorbent material like kitty litter to soak up oil spills before cleaning.
  • Invest in weed control. Regularly inspect the joints between pavers for weeds. Remove any weeds promptly to prevent them from taking root and causing damage.
  • Regularly inspect for damage. Periodically check for cracked or damaged pavers. Replace any damaged pavers promptly to maintain the integrity of the entire surface.

What’s the proper way to clean pavers?
To properly clean pavers, start by using a pressure washer with a fan tip and low pressure (under 3,000 psi) to remove surface dirt with plain water. Avoid high-pressure on joints to protect joint sand.

For stubborn stains, mix mild detergent with water and apply gently. For especially tough stains or growths like algae, scrub using a brush with a water-detergent solution, then rinse well. You can also use specific cleaners for oil or rust stains as per manufacturer instructions. Apply a sealer every few years, especially for porous materials like natural stone, to enhance protection against stains and simplify future cleaning efforts.

Oh – and avoid using harsh chemicals like bleach or acids, as they can damage the paver surface and joint sand.

Your best bet? Periodically, consider hiring professionals for deep cleaning and resealing to ensure thorough maintenance and optimal longevity of your pavers.
