Curious About Stoves?

Wood Stoves

Wood stoves are the most classic and traditional of your options, heating wood logs to produce significant heat for your space. They’re appreciated for their rustic charm and the ambiance they create.

Pros?

  • Because they burn real wood, they offer a cozy ambiance, allowing homeowners to enjoy the crackle and pop of a real fire.
  • If you have easy access to cheap – or free – wood, they can be a cost-effective heating solution.
  • They’re independent from electricity, so they’ll still remain useful during power outages.

The cons? They require regular stocking of wood, which can be messy and intrusive. In addition, wood stoves are the highest maintenance option, requiring homeowners to build and maintain fires, then clean up ash piles and wood chips after the fact.

Gas Stoves

Gas fires are consistent and controllable by design, and they’re best known for their high convenience levels, allowing you easy access to heat without having to do much to get it. Gas stoves nowadays come in a range of design options, allowing you to match your home aesthetic, no problem.

Pros?

  • Gas stoves allow you to turn the fire on or off, as well as adjust the flame height and fire intensity, with easy-to-operate controls.
  • There’s no fuel storage necessary, as natural gas is piped directly to your home by a gas utility.
  • There’s very little mess and maintenance involved with gas systems, making them well-suited for those with already-busy lifestyles.

As for the downsides, gas is always going to be a little less authentic-looking than a wood option. That said, gas logs nowadays are designed to look very realistic, so you can get pretty close to the “real” thing!

Pellet Stoves

Pellet stoves are often thought of as the middle-ground choice between gas or wood. If you crave convenience, but don’t want to give up an authentic wood fire, pellets might be the option for you. Just load the hopper with your wood pellets, then let your system do the work of automatically releasing them, as needed.

Pros?

  • Pellet stoves have extremely low particulate emissions due to the high burn efficiency and density of the fuel.
  • Most pellet units have much higher combustion and heating efficiencies.
  • Pellets are easy to store, meaning you can easily tuck them away until you need to refill the hopper.

Now, many find the work involved with these units too similar to that of wood…you still have to load the fuel, and there will still be a mess to clean up after the fact. Another consideration is that pellet stoves use electricity to operate, so they won’t do you much good in an outage.

Electric Stoves

Electric stoves give off a unique, hypnotic glow – just with no actual flames. Simply plug it in, then flip a switch or grab your remote. Electric stoves produce radiant heat and allow you to completely control the heat output.

Pros?

  • Electric stoves offer extremely reliable heat without the need for any type of venting.
  • They can be installed almost anywhere (as long as there’s space and an outlet nearby), and they can be moved around the household.
  • Electric stoves are extremely hassle-free and don’t require any fuel storage.

The big drawback of an electric option is that it’s the least “real-looking” of all of your options. No matter how close modern options get, you won’t get as much of a traditional feel as you would with gas or wood.

Do Freestanding Stoves Require a Chimney?

Well, it depends on the type of fuel you go with…

Stoves that require a chimney…

  • Wood Stoves: Wood stoves need a chimney or flue to vent smoke and combustion gases safely out of the home. This typically involves a stovepipe that connects the stove to an existing chimney or an installation of a new chimney that vents through a wall or ceiling.
  • Pellet Stoves: Pellet stoves require a venting system to expel combustion gases. This can be a vertical flue system similar to wood stoves or a horizontal vent that goes directly through an exterior wall.
  • (Most) Gas Stoves: Most gas stoves need a vent to expel combustion gases. This can be a direct vent system, which draws air from outside and expels gases through a coaxial pipe, or a traditional chimney.

Stoves that don’t require a chimney…

  • (Some) Gas Stoves: Some models of gas stoves, known as vent-free gas stoves, do not require any venting, but they must be used according to local building codes and manufacturer guidelines to ensure safety.
  • Electric Stoves: Electric stoves do not burn fuel, do not produce combustion gases, and therefore require no venting or chimney system to operate.

What Is a Freestanding Stove?

A freestanding stove is an efficient – and often aesthetically-pleasing – way to supplement heat in your home, coming in a range of fuel types, from wood to gas to pellet to electric.

  • Wood stoves provide a traditional ambiance, but require manual fuel handling and maintenance.
  • Gas stoves offer convenient and clean-burning heat with minimal maintenance.
  • Pellet stoves combine high efficiency and controllable heat output.
  • Electric stoves are easy to install and use, but typically have lower heat output.

People often opt for stoves over fireplaces because they offer more placement flexibility – meaning they’re easier to fit into smaller or more awkward spaces – and they’re known for their high efficiency levels.
