Curious About Log Sets?

Vented Logs

Vented gas logs are more common, and they require some type of chimney or venting system to operate correctly and safely.

They’re more known for:

  • producing realistic-looking flames
  • providing strong heat output
  • being low maintenance
  • offering a safe way to heat your home

Vent-Free Logs

Vent-free gas logs do not require a chimney or flue. They are designed to burn cleanly and efficiently, but require proper ventilation in the room to minimize the risk of dangerous fumes affecting indoor air quality. They also don’t produce very realistic-looking flames.

They’re best known for:

  • high heat output, surpassing their vented counterparts
  • easy installation, as no venting is required
  • featuring oxygen depletion sensors (ODS) to ensure safety

Electric Log Sets

Electric log sets require no venting or chimney…just plug them in, turn them on, and enjoy more heat in your space. These logs are equipped with LED lights to simulate the appearance of burning wood and flames, just without all the maintenance involved.

We offer realistic-looking, hand-painted electric log sets, complete with glowing ember beds. The flame effects are incredibly lifelike with innovative 3D designs that create realistic flame and smoke effects.

Our options come with both infrared heat for larger rooms (up to 1000 sq. ft.) or standard heat which is ideal for more compact rooms.

What are the benefits of electric fireplace logs?

  • Ease of Installation: Electric logs are relatively easy to install compared to gas or wood-burning systems. They usually require just an electrical outlet and can be set up in a variety of existing fireplaces or fireplace inserts.
  • Safe To Operate: Since they don’t produce actual flames or require combustion, you won’t have the same risks you would with other fuel types – fire hazards, smoke, carbon monoxide, etc.
  • Low Maintenance: Electric fireplace logs require minimal maintenance. There’s no need to clean out ashes or soot, and no venting or chimney maintenance is required.
  • Strong Heat Output: Electric logs are efficient because they convert almost all the electrical energy into heat or light.
  • They’re Versatile. They provide the option to use just the visual effect without heating, making them versatile for year-round use. They also can be easily moved around the home.
  • Easy Operations: Just turn a switch and you’ve got power. Many electric logs even come with remote controls or built-in thermostats, allowing you to adjust the flame effect and heat output easily.
  • Eco-Friendly: Since they don’t use fossil fuels or produce emissions, electric fireplace logs are a more environmentally friendly option compared to gas or wood-burning fires.

Vented Vs Vent Free Gas Logs

So…what’s the better option?

Vent-free styles are better for those looking for more heat output above all else. That said, there are some safety considerations (they can only be run a certain amount of hours at a time), and they won’t look as realistic as vented options.

Vented gas logs are for those who value heat, but still want their system to look like “real” fire. They’re also considered a little safer, and won’t have the same indoor air quality risks that a vent-free choice would.

How Do I Clean & Maintain My Log Set?

Cleaning and maintaining your fireplace log set is important for maintaining longevity, safety, and great overall performance. That said, how you maintain your gas logs will differ depending on fuel type.

Gas Log Set Maintenance

  • Clean them regularly. After ensuring the gas supply is turned off and the fireplace is completely cool, use a soft brush or a vacuum with a brush attachment to remove dust and debris from the logs and ensure the burner ports are not clogged. Avoid using a damp cloth or cleaning solutions that can damage the logs.
  • Check on your pilot light. Inspect the pilot light and burner for proper flame appearance. If you notice any issues, consult the manufacturer’s guidelines or get in touch with a professional chimney and fireplace technician.
  • Give them a once-over. Regularly check for any leaks or damage in the gas lines. If you suspect a leak, turn off the gas immediately and contact the proper authorities.
  • Book professional maintenance. Have your gas log set inspected and serviced annually by a professional fireplace technician to ensure all components are functioning correctly and safely.

Electric Log Set Maintenance

  • Dust them regularly. After turning off and unplugging the electric log set, use a dry cloth to wipe the logs and remove dust. Avoid getting any electrical components wet.
  • Clean the glass. If your electric log set has a glass panel, clean it with a glass cleaner that is safe for use on electric fireplaces.
  • Check on the heating element. Ensure the heating element is free from dust and debris. Use a vacuum with a brush attachment or a soft cloth to gently clean around the heating element.
  • Inspect the electrical components. Check for any visible damage to the electrical components, such as frayed wires or loose connections. If you notice any issues, contact an electrician for repairs.
  • Professional check-ups. If you suspect issues, schedule an inspection with a professional to ensure all electrical and heating components are in proper working condition.

No matter the fuel you’re using, avoid harsh chemicals when cleaning, opting for mild cleaning agents instead. On that same note, avoid abrasive sponges and cloths that can scratch or damage the logs.

In addition, always refer to the manufacturer’s maintenance guidelines for specific instructions related to your system and setup.

Can I Install a Gas or Electric Log Set Myself?

We don’t recommend installing gas log sets yourself. You have to know how to properly work with gas lines, as well as ensure proper ventilation is in place to minimize any risk of gas leaks or carbon monoxide exposure.

Electric log sets typically plug into a standard outlet, so as long as you position the log set in the fireplace according to the manufacturer’s instructions, ensuring it’s stable and level, DIY is definitely an option. Unlike gas log sets, electric log sets don’t produce emissions, so ventilation isn’t a concern.
