August Giveaway – Craftmade

August Giveaway: CRAFTMADE Ceiling Fan

For over past 20 years the Marra Family has brought excellence in design and quality construction. Angersteins has worked with the family on several projects where quality and value matter most in the finished product. Daughter Desiree Donofrio’s new home is this months feature. “Working with Angerstein’s was a wonderful experience, they made my dream become a true reality and to do that you need vision, love, and knowledge. We worked so hard as a team and I see it when I walk in my door.”

What began as a drab colonial has become a stunning “rustic chic” farm house that is perfect for family living. The lighting for the home was selected to bring a sense of fun and whimsy to each room, while also providing quality lighting for cooking, entertaining, reading, homework and more.

DSCF1296 DSCF1327 Enter to Win a Craftmade Ceiling Fan – a $500 value. Craftmade Fan

Craftmade Fans: Energy conservation and rising fuel costs make ceiling fans a natural choice when it comes to conserving our natural resources. Ceiling fans not only circulate cool air in the summer, they also help with the movement of warm air in the winter.

During the summer months, a fan operating in the normal mode can reduce how cool you feel in a room by as much as eight degrees, allowing you to raise the air conditioner’s thermostat and reduce energy costs.

In the winter, fans should be operated in reverse mode to recirculate the warm air trapped at the ceiling. For maximum energy savings, turn your fans off when you leave a room.

More than just functional appliances, today’s fans have become an important design element in homes and are available in a wide array of sizes and styles.

Tricks of the Trade from Murray Feiss Designers

A great lighting strategy can do so much more than create a safe, inviting atmosphere in your home. With the right lighting scheme, you can dramatically enhance your home’s aesthetics (and value) by accentuating its best features, and de-emphasizing “problem areas.” Here, the world renowned lighting designers from Murray Feiss offer their exclusive tips and tricks!

Murray Feiss

Creative Ceiling Solutions

  • To make low ceilings seem higher, bounce light from up-lighting fixtures (like torchiere-style wall sconces) to visually “raise” ceilings.
  • To highlight dramatic Cathedral or beamed ceilings: Use wall sconces to cast uplight, emphasizing beamed ceilings.
  • To disguise rough or patchy surfaces, keep lighting off of the ceiling by using only downlighting. Imperfections in a surface will be less noticeable without direct light shining on them. Beautiful, decorative fixtures (such as chandeliers) can also serve as alternate focal points.

Accent Lighting Tips

  • Highlight textured surfaces for a fascinating look. Whether it’s a tile
  • backsplash or a stone fireplace, textured surfaces should be brought to life with the proper accent lighting. For the best results, “skim” the surfaces with a slightly-angled light.
  • Consider backlighting decorative objects. Placing a simple light behind decorative fixtures, like plants or sculptures, creates a fascinating accent lighting effect. This works particularly well with accent pieces that have translucent components, like glass or even the water in fountains.

Crystal Lighting Care

Every SCHONBEK® product is of heirloom quality and will last for generations. To ensure it retains its brilliance and splendor for years to come, proper care and regular cleaning are necessary.

Schonbek chandelier

It is recommended that SCHONBEK products, and particularly their crystal trim, be lightly dusted with a feather or lambswool duster, or soft brush every two months, or whenever it appears dull or dusty. A thorough cleaning should be completed every six months.

Before cleaning a SCHONBEK product, first locate the fixture’s trim diagram. This will assist in replacing the crystal trim in its proper location after cleaning. Should a replacement trim diagram be required, please call 800-836-1892 to speak with a SCHONBEK customer service representative, who can provide a new diagram.

SCHONBEK recommends several different cleaning methods, depending on the type of fixture. Some fixtures can be cleaned with limited removal of crystal, while others must be completely untrimmed.

Place a soft towel or blanket directly beneath the fixture to limit the damage to both the crystal and the surface below the fixture, should a piece of crystal be dislodged during the cleaning process.

Extreme care must be taken around any electrical fixture. For personal safety and the safety of the product, be sure that the fixture has been turned off. Never rotate or spin the fixture as this can cause the fixture to lose support and fall. Instead, move around the fixture while cleaning.

White Glove Method

Prepare a cleaning solution of one part isopropyl alcohol to three parts distilled water and place in a clean spray bottle. Do not use packaged cleaning fluids, as many of these contain ammonia, which may degrade the finish of the fixture and the quality of the crystal.Wearing white cotton gloves, spray one glove with the solution and keep one dry. Gently polish each crystal with the damp glove and immediately wipe it with the dry glove. Do not tug or pull on the crystal, as this may cause the connectors to chip or crack the crystal, or dislodge it from the fixture.Warning: To reduce the risk of personal injury due to fire and/or electric shock, never spray solution at or near the fixture.

Crystal Removal Method

Gently remove trim and hand-wash the crystal in lukewarm water using a mild detergent. Rinse in clean water and dry with a soft clean cloth. Do not soak finished crystal such as SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS Colors: Teak, Golden Shadow or Silver Shade, for extended periods, as this may degrade the crystal’s finish. With the fixture untrimmed and turned off, wipe the frame, including the light bulbs once they are completely cool, with a soft cloth.Wearing white gloves, finger-cots or using a soft clean cloth, gently replace the trim as directed in the trim diagram.

Kitchen Lighting Tips – Angersteins

Island counters and breakfast bars demand a combination of task and general lighting. A very good solution is to add a group of miniature pendants.

Mount each pendant so that the bottom of the shade is approximately 66″ above the floor so it is possible to look across the room below the pendants. If the shades are not very deep and there is seating at the kitchen island or peninsula, install the pendants a few inches lower (60″ above the floor).

In general, you should install one pendant for every two feet of counter space and try to use an odd number of pendants to create better balance. Thin, narrow pendants, however, might look more pleasing with the addition of one or two extra fixtures.

Lighting Tips

Lighting your entry area, don’t just concentrate on the inside lighting. The lighting outside your entry area, as well as the way the inside light is seen from outside your home, combine to create your home’s welcoming appeal. Be sure to direct some of the outside light downward to illuminate walking paths. And once inside, provide some overhead light to eliminate unwelcoming shadows.

Outdoor Lighting

Some favorite chandeliers from Currey & Co:

Delaware Lighting

Keep in mind that light that shines upward or directly toward people’s eyes can create uncomfortable glare. Sooner or later, some of your guests will visit the powder room. Everyone feels better when they like what they see in the mirror, so choose light bulbs that flatter skin tones. And fixtures with an unexpected pop of texture and pattern can turn an otherwise ordinary space into an interesting private retreat.

In the living area, whether enjoying family time or entertaining, proper lighting makes every activity more enjoyable and aesthetically pleasing. An important element to a perfectly lit living area is proportion. Add the number of feet in your room’s length, width and height. That number (in feet) should be approximately the same as the number of inches of your light fixture’s height. Also, that fixture should hang 78-84 inches from the floor (as measured from the bottom of the fixture).

Home fashion bids a warm welcome to matte golds, which are richer and far more refined than their tacky, brassy relatives. Like the jewelry that inspires many of its forms and finishes, it pairs particularly well with gem tones.

Broche in Matte Gold is a jewelry-like creation from Crystorama that invites interpretation by homeowners. Reminiscent of sunbursts and sunflowers, it is designed for both ceiling and sconce mountings.

LED Lighting

Don’t Waste Time Changing Bulbs
Instead, use LEDs, which last 25 times longer than regular incandecent bulbs.

RELIABILITY: The life span of an LED bulb is 25,000 hours

  • While most CFLs (compact fluorescent lights) cannot be dimmed and many can flicker, LEDs (light emitting diodes) use solid-state technology, which allows for dimming and eliminates flickering. LED lights can withstand extremely cold conditions, so they are very durable, which is one of the reasons LED lights are so popular for outdoor lighting applications.
  • LEDs turn on instantly, so there is no warm-up time. In fact, they are ideal for uses where there is a need for frequent “on/off” cycling. This is an advantage over fluorescent lamps, which fail faster when turned on and off often.
  • LED light bulbs do not contain breakable filaments or glass, making them shock-resistant, unlike fluorescent and incandescent bulbs, which are fragile.
  • Most important of all is the fact that LED light bulbs last 25 times longer than the old-fashioned incandescent bulbs. Instead of 1,000 hours, which is the typical rated life of standard incandescent bulbs, the rated life of LEDs is usually 25,000 hours or more. (The rated life of CFLs is about 9,000 hours.) This makes the LED light bulb cost-effective in the long run.
  • LED lighting can save up to 85 percent of the electricity used by incandescent bulbs and up to 50 percent of electricity used by fluorescents.
  • Unlike the old-fashioned incandescents, which waste 90 percent of the energy they use by giving off heat, LED bulbs do not create heat. Since LED light bulbs produce significantly less heat than incandescent bulbs, they reduce the need for air conditioning in the home.
  • While it’s true that LED light bulbs are more expensive, they provide real cost savings because they consume less energy – resulting in lower energy bills.

It’s Time to Take Advantage of the Savings with LED Lighting

The benefits of LED lighting in your home or office are being heralded everywhere – the local papers, magazines, blogs, websites, and just recently in the New York Times – see our post on facebook.com/angersteins.  So, what are you waiting for? Now is the time. And here are the reasons why you should start changing out your inefficient lighting for the rightfully popular LED.

LED - Lighting Design

1.)   Long-lasting – LED bulbs last up to 10 times as long as compact fluorescents, and far longer than typical incandescent bulbs.

2.)   Durable – since LEDs do not have a filament, they are not damaged under circumstances when a regular incandescent bulb would be broken. Because they are solid, LED bulbs hold up well to jarring and bumping.

3.)   Cool – these bulbs do not cause heat build-up; LEDs produce 3.4 btu’s/hour, compared to 85 for incandescent bulbs. Common incandescent bulbs get hot and contribute to heat build-up in a room. LEDs prevent this heat build-up, thereby helping to reduce air conditioning costs in the home.

4.)   Mercury-Free – no mercury is used in the manufacturing of LEDs

5.)   More efficient – LED light bulbs use only 2-17 watts of electricity – that is 1/3rd to 1/30th of what an incandescent or CFL bulb uses. LED bulbs save electricity, remain cool and save money on replacement costs since LED bulbs last so long.

6.)   Low maintenance – since LED last so long, there is no climbing on ladders to constantly change bulbs

7.)   Cost-effective – although LEDs are initially expensive, the cost is recouped over time and in energy savings. The cost of LED bulbs has gone down considerably in the last few years, and is continuing to go down. Today, there are many new LED light bulbs for use in the home, and the cost is becoming less of an issue.

At Angerstein’s Lighting we see these benefits helping our customers every day. At local clothing and shoe boutique, Peter Kate, they had problems with the halogen bulbs giving off so much heat that they had to keep their doors open – even in the winter months. Replacing the very hot and inefficient halogen lamps with LEDs made the store much more comfortable. Sandy Conley, manager of Angerstein’s Design Center, often works with local churches, such as Limestone Presbyterian, Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd and St John’s Episcopal, to replace their inefficient lighting in the naves and sanctuaries. Lowering their energy costs allows them to give more to their community outreach programs. Brenda Robinett, who at Angerstein’s works with many of the local landscape designers, has noticed a huge increase in the sales of LED landscape lights. “Landscape light bulbs go out quite frequently for many reasons – heat build-up, bad electrical connections causing shorts, lawnmowers hitting the lights continuously. With the prices of LED landscape light fixtures coming down, it is easier for us to sell the low-maintenance benefits to the customer.”

Lighting is Art: Angersteins

Lighting is Art:

Lighting as art? Absolutely. If you look at home decorating magazines and websites, often, lighting is the focal point. Soft contemporary, or transitional, is the top trend in lighting now, and continuing into 2013. Round chandeliers make a bold statement, and soften the angular corners of a room. Two of my favorites are the Flatiron by Troy Lighting and Palla by Crystorama. If round is a little too bold, try a softer oval chandelier such as the Murray Feiss Kinsey pendant. If bling is your thing, they make beautiful pendants from all kinds of exotic materials. Examples include Currey & Company’s Alberto, with turquoise beads, the Roundabout with crystal facets, and the Sahara which is a hand-pierced nickel plate.

Page 20 of 26Outdoor Living…Take it Outside:

Outdoor rooms are becoming more popular than ever, and it has gone way beyond patios and grills. As the E. P. Henry company, the premier family-owned and operated manufacturer of HardscapingTM products in North America, has stated, “An outdoor living space is a place for you to enjoy the natural beauty of your backyard with the comfort of the indoors.” Flat pavers are being replaced by richly textured paving stones such as Bristol Stone. They add texture and interest to your patio. To help define your style, select an appropriate gas or wood firepit. The Outdoor Great Room Company’s Key Largo contemporary fire pit with crystal beads is a great focus piece in your outdoor living area. Take your outdoor room a step further, and add really comfortable furniture such as the Rustic collection’s sectional sofa by Summer Classics. And, for your outdoor kitchen, choose from a multitude of fun accessories such as the beverage caddy, condiment tray, wood chopping board with disposal bin, or an icemaker!

outdoor design

Accent Home Décor with Meaning:

A neutral, sophisticated pallet is popular again this year in home décor. It is the perfect backdrop for the highly stylized accent pieces that really give the flavor and meaning to a space. Look for eye-catching pieces such as large wicker, bamboo and water hyacinth baskets. I also love the smooth, grey-taupe of reclaimed wood that gives the appearance of age, but is fashioned in modern shapes. One of our favorites is the Gabby Home demilune table with linen inset doors. And finally, have fun with over-sized, unique accents such as a lantern. They are pictured everywhere – hanging over dining tables, sitting on the steps outside your door or placed on a sideboard.

Fall Projects – Angersteins

As the economy continues to shift, so does the goals of consumers. Are we more cautious in making new purchases or remodeling endeavors; and how does that affect our spending habits?

“Kitchen upgrades still appear to be a top priority for homeowners”, says Kristen Ursomarso. “While the economy is improving,  the customers are still feeling the impact of the recession,”

Finding and spending the time and money to complete home remodeling projects may be difficult;  our customers are finding a way to do  both. We find the reasons why homeowners are remodeling remain the same, they take a more planned approach and projects are on a smaller scale.

They are spending their money on items used in their daily lives and are making strategic updates..

The outlook for bathroom and kitchen projects are very positive, many of our customers are remodeling within the next six months. Projects topping that list include painting, installing a new countertop and adding new lighting. Homeowners are also looking for trusted brands that will increase their projects’ impact on their homes, with long-lasting value and durability.

Outdoor Lighting remains a strong category for fall. Customers want to make use of their outdoor living spaces well into October. Creating a living space for fireplaces & firepits is always a popular update project this time of year.
